The European Monetary Union and the Euro
On 1 January 2002, the Euro currency (€) was introduced in twelve countries of the eurozone area. The former national currencies are now no longer legal tender. This has now been extended to 15 countries including:
- Austria
- Belgium
- Cyprus
- Finland
- France
- Germany
- Greece
- Ireland
- Italy
- Luxembourg
- Malta
- Netherlands
- Portugal
- Slovenia
- Spain
The total polulation within the Eurozone countries is now 320 million people. The United Kingdom has not yet adopted the Euro currency.
