The European Monetary Union and the Euro 

On 1 January 2002, the Euro currency () was introduced in twelve countries of the eurozone area. The former national currencies are now no longer legal tender. This has now been extended to 15 countries including: 

  •  Austria
  •  Belgium
  •  Cyprus
  •  Finland
  •  France
  •  Germany
  •  Greece
  •  Ireland
  •  Italy
  •  Luxembourg
  •  Malta
  •  Netherlands
  •  Portugal
  •  Slovenia
  •  Spain

The total polulation within the Eurozone countries is now 320 million people. The United Kingdom has not yet adopted the Euro currency.
