What is an Equality Impact Assessment?
What is an Equality Impact Assessment?
An Equality Impact Assessment is a systematic process that helps services to identify where and how proposed policies or existing services could improve their ability to serve all members of the community fairly.
All EIAs follow a similar process and staff that carry out EIAs have received training to assist them to undertake the assessment effectively. The process begins with setting and assessing the topic for the EIA, which is normally a service or part of a service. This is followed by a process of research to assess the current situation and the extent of available information. Consultation with service users and other groups that may have an interest in the service is then carried out, which can help to fill gaps in the information available.
All of the information is then considered as a whole and a judgment is made about what course of action needs to be taken to deliver services as equitably as possible, bearing in mind the specific needs of some groups, and other external factors such financial constraints or changes in local or national policy.
