Ellen Barnes Lecture Series 2011/12
Welcome to the 2011/2012 Ellen Barnes Lecture Series. This year sees a variety of public lectures and recitals, which are free to members of the public. All lectures take place in Stalybridge Civic Hall.
Ellen Barnes was born in 1842, daughter of John and Emma Cheetham of Eastwood House, Stalybridge. Her father was a mill owner and MP and gave financial help to the Congregational School and Church, Stalybridge, where Ellen married James Richardson Barnes in 1864. Ellen was a committed educationalist and supporter of local organisations. This commitment continued after her death in 1920 when she left a sum of money to ‘the Mayor and Alderman of Stalybridge... for the payment of lectures on literary subjects’. This legacy became known as the Ellen Barnes Lecture Series. Since October 1925 this generous bequest has provided free public lectures during the Winter months.
