Using electricity and gas in our day-to-day lives results in carbon dioxide emissions - this is known to be the major cause of global warming and climate change, which in turn causes excessive rainfall, flooding and sea level rises.
Energy conservation is a key priority for Tameside Council. This is something the Council takes very seriously and intends to lead by example.
A Carbon Reduction Forum has been set up to monitor Council activities to reduce energy consumption and the related carbon emissions i.e. switching lights and equipment off when not in use, etc.
The Forum is being chaired by Councillor B. Holland and is made up of seven members. The Council has developed and adopted a Carbon Management Strategy, which outlines the actions it will undertake over the coming years.
The Forum had its first meeting on 8th March 2007 and a decision was taken to sign the Nottingham Declaration on Climate Change
This reiterates the Council's commitment to reduce its energy use, which will help mitigate global warming and the effects of climate change at a local level.
The decision was ratified at Full Council on 17th April 2007.
