This is a historical document produced in 2003 for The Year of our Environment
Two of the most important issues for Tameside residents are the quality of the urban environment and the growing problem of antisocial behaviour. These twin issues are closely connected and have a real and immediate impact on peoples’ quality of life.

“We are committed to providing a wide range of high quality environmental services that protect and improve our local environment. This year in particular we want more people to use the successful blue bin scheme for recycling paper. We will also be distributing 40,000 green bins to allow people to recycle their glass and aluminium cans. We will also be getting tough on people who spoil our environment by clamping down on those who drop litter, dump rubbish or who let their dogs foul.” |

“Antisocial behaviour has a corrosive affect on society and also reduces the quality of our local environment. This year we will be adopting a zero tolerance approach to such behaviour and will continue to crack down on all types of crime and disorder wherever it occurs. The Tameside Patroller Service will be expanded to 60 strong by March 2003. We will continue to crack down on truancy by working in partnership with others such as the Police.” |

“We want to improve the appearance of our Borough by investing in more and better street cleaning. We will also be expanding our successful Britain-in-Bloom activities to cover the whole of Tameside. In all that we do we want to encourage everyone to do their bit for the environment. In particular we will be doing all that we can to help our young people to develop into responsible citizens by encouraging them to respect themselves, others and their local area.” |
