Activity: 25.1 Entrance in Large City category of Britain in Bloom Competition for the first time.
Progress: Tameside successfully entered North West in Bloom in the Large City category and was judged on Tuesday 2 July 2003.
"Tameside in Bloom" was engineered to be a borough-wide scheme, with the prime objective of enhancing Tameside's environment. The campaign successfully:
- Launched garden competitions in Ashton, Stalybridge, Longdendale & Hattersley, Hyde, Denton & Audenshaw and Droylsden District Assemblies
- Launched Ashton's Street Pride competition in partnership with ENCAMS (the Tidy Britain group)
- Recruited offenders serving Community Service Sentences to carry out hard landscape projects
- Established partnerships with local businesses, eg. Tesco's, British Waterways, Public Houses, Commercial Service providers etc.
- Secured sponsorship from Local Businesses
- Recruited support from Local Schools and Volunteer Groups, eg. Friends of Gorse Hall, Holy Trinity Primary School, Cannon Burrows Primary School etc.
- Designed new planting schemes and hard landscaping in Tameside's Public Green Spaces, eg. Freedom Gardens, Ashton Memorial Gardens, Victoria Park, Rose Terrace Stalybridge, etc.
A campaign portfolio was completed which covers the extent and success of the scheme, and which was submitted to the Britain in Bloom Judges as part of the borough's entry.
The competition results will be announced on Friday 26 September 2003.
