Year of Our Environment - Expanded Eco-school Scheme

18. Promoting Good Citizenship - Expand eco-schools


Activity: 18.1 10 new schools joined the scheme in September and will be carrying out a variety of activities for the Year of our Environment

Progress: A number of Street-to-Stadium Events have been held this year with encouraging numbers of young people participating:

The JSLA Sports Festivals (Junior Sports Leadership Award), were held in July. Eight 8 Secondary and 32 Primary Schools performed.


Activity: All 60 schools currently in the scheme will be doing something special for the Year of our Environment

Progress: An environmental sports relay was held in July called "Phil the Bin." The relay demonstrated the importance of recycling for the environment and over 70 schools took part.


Activity: An Eco-schools conference will be held in September/October 2003

Progress: A Briefing for potential new schools was held during May and as a result, five new Eco-schools have been brought on-board.


Activity: 10 new schools are expected to join in the new academic year 2003/2004

Progress: A Launch conference has been scheduled for 29th September for the next group of schools taking part in the Eco-Schools project.


Activity: A Young Peoples Parliament is planned for the Autumn term 2003

Progress: This initiative happened and took shape in July in the form of the Tameside Young People's Summit for Our Environment. The summit was attended by representatives from 24 schools, who represent over 7,000 pupils.
