Tameside is home to approximately 216,900 people.
Females comprise 51.2% of the overall population. Almost a fifth (19.5%) of the Boroughs residents are children (i.e. under 16 years old), whilst 15.8% are over the age of 65; 64.7% of the population are aged between 16-64 years old.
Over the past 10 years (mid-2001 to mid-2010), Tameside has experienced an overall increase of 1.8% in our population. Those aged 65 years old and over increased 7.2% over this period, whilst over the same period we saw a decline of 6.8% in the number of children in the overall population.
By 2033, the population of the Borough is projected to increase to 238,700 people, with the age group with the greatest projected percentage change in population expected to be those aged 65 years plus, at 63.3%.
In terms of ethnicity (based on ONS mid-2009 estimates in a total population of 215,400 people), 91.4% of the Boroughs residents were White; 5.8% were Asian or Asian British; 1.3% were of Mixed Race background; 0.9% were Black or Black British; and 0.7% were from other ethnic backgrounds (for example Chinese).
