A new season of the On Top of the World programme hits Tameside from the Greater Manchester Music Action Zone. This season Tameside’s Arts and Events team are working with partners across Tameside to recruit keen musical young people who wouldn’t usually get the chance to access projects with professional musicians. The young people hear about the project through the Youth Service, Groundwork’s targeted youth programmes, through schools, or because someone they know has put their name forward. The musicians are singers, MCs,Photograph of participants taking part in the workshops and instrumentalists from across Greater Manchester, with active performing careers, who can inspire, encourage and pass on knowledge about the music industry. As the young people come together from across the borough, they take a journey to try new forms of music, shares experiences and get to know people from different areas and different backgrounds.

The group has meeting on a Tuesday night since November, picking up new skills and writing new material. So far the group have written three new tracks which Photograph of participants taking part in the workshopscombine singing, MCing and beat box with a band backing the lyrics in styles ranging from R’n’B to reggae. Young participant, Kayleigh, 17 said “It’s really amazing, meeting new people – You learn new things like new instruments and working with MCs like Rush.” Kyle, 15, said “It brings your inner self out, and you explore your talents and it shows you to use them with confidence. ”Joe Harrison from GMMAZ said “If this group is anything to go by, then Tameside has a bright musical future.”

The participants also get Photograph of participants taking part in the workshopsthe chance to find out about creative careers by working with PANDA (the Performing Arts Network Development Agency) through their workshops and roadshows. The project will culminate in recordings at the end of March, performance in the future and opportunities to take part in bigger projects in Manchester.
