Xmas Switch Ons 2007
Tameside Christmas Light Switch-Ons
Organised by Tameside Council, the 2007 Christmas Light Switch-ons attracted massive record crowds in Ashton, Hyde and Stalybridge last week! Tameside Radio 103.6FM
, hosted by Wayne Kay helped to make the events a huge success with their festive pre-show entertainment. Performing live on stage were talented Soul and Motown singer Darren Phillips, one of the finest Meat Loaf Tribute singers in the country, Peter Young, and well-known local singer and saxophonist Carlo Sax.
The first big switch-on took place in Ashton last Thursday outside Ashton Town Hall. Carrbrook Brass Band played traditional Christmas Carols and a number of local Ashton Primary School Choirs helped raise the roof in the town with their beautiful arrangements of some favourite Christmas classics. The Ashton School of Dancing brought the stage to life with their slick Christmas dancing routines.
Those attending the Ashton event were treated to special guest appearances from 911 singer Lee Brennan, ex-Emmerdale soap star Cleveland Campbell and Janice Connolly from Phoenix Nights who are appearing in Tameside Hippodrome's Christmas Pantomime 'Aladdin' which starts on 12th December.
Hyde and Stalybridge were treated to performances by Hollingworth & Longdendale Brass Band and Stalybridge Old Band respectively. The crowds joined in the singing with local primary school choirs in Hyde and with children from Gorse Hall Kids Club in Stalybridge.
Enchanting duo Hannah Bielawska and Heather Cooper wowed the audiences with their spectacular singing performances at Hyde and Stalybridge and exciting Theatre Company The Fairly Famous Family presented a fabulous fun filled show, with juggling and unicycling.
Free Christmas craft and face painting activities were on offer for all the children, alongside a variety of stalls selling delights such as mulled wine, roasted chestnuts, German sausage and hog roast.
Each evening culminated with a magical festive finale, which saw Father Christmas abseil his way down the Town Hall buildings towards the excited crowds below. A magical time was had by all as The Civic Mayor of Tameside and Father Christmas switched on the lights to kick start the festive season.
