Fair Play Charter Scheme

New Charter for the Motor Trade

What is it?

This is a scheme introduced by the Trading Standards Division in an attempt to promote businesses that operate in a fair and honest way. The scheme is voluntary and is open to any business involved in the motor trade to show that they are committed to fair, honest trade with consumers. It covers the sales of new and used cars as well as servicing and repairs.

How do Traders get on the scheme?

If traders are committed to trading fairly and honestly they can apply to join the registration scheme online. Once an application has been received and scrutinised by Trading Standards, staff will then visit the company to carry out as assessment to decide if the trader meets the standard. If they are successful the company is welcomed onto the scheme.

What's it for?

Briefly, Traders on the scheme will:

  • Ensure that all vehicles and goods are supplied with good title, are of satisfactory quality, fit for their intended purpose and as described to the customer
  • Provide, where possible, complete and accurate information when diagnosing vehicle faults
  • Provide customer with and estimate or quote for repairs and servicing
  • Not commence work on a vehicle with the customer's prior agreement
  • Ensure that all services are provided with reasonable care and skill and without any unnecessary delay
  • Where possible make parts available for return to the customer
  • Fully honour a customer's statutory rights
  • Comply with all relevant criminal legislation
  • Inspect vehicles before selling them
  • Ensure that mileometer reading are verified where possible
  • Operate a customer complaints procedure

The scheme is operated within 7 Authorities in Greater Manchester and St Helens. . Businesses who are on the scheme can display this logo on a window sticker and on their stationery or their advertising.
