Family Learning

Introduction

By 2010 all schools will have to provide access to a core offer of extended services provision for children and families.

This core offer includes the provision of Family Learning

Family Learning can be:

  • Activities where children and parents learn together
  • Courses aimed at parents to support their own child's learning

This webpage provides information for schools on Tameside's Family Learning Team and the family learning activities available to support parents and children's learning.

Family Learning in Tameside

The Family Learning Team is part of Tameside Council's Adult Learning Service, offering learning opportunities to adults in Tameside. The team consists of qualified and well trained tutors, who provide a range of courses to suit learners' needs. At the heart of the training is the belief that parents and carers have a vital role in supporting their children's learning. The courses in turn may also help to identify any support and learning needs of the parents.

Courses we offer

  • Fun with Phonics
  • Time for School
  • Playtime for Families
  • Story sacks
  • Keeping up with the Kids (Family literacy and numeracy)
  • Keeping up with Early Learning (ESOL)
  • Scrapbooking
  • Card making
  • The Good Life
  • Sound as a Pound (Financial literacy)
  • Speakeasy
  • Healthy eating and Cooking
  • Confidence Building
  • Family ICT

Most courses are 6 or 10 weeks long

In addition to providing courses for parents the Family Learning Team also offer Step In To Learning. This is a training and development programme to equip staff with the knowledge and skills needed to identify parents'/carers' literacy, language and/or numeracy needs. It also provides an opportunity for staff to take a skills check to review their own literacy and numeracy skills and gain qualifications up to Level 2

Working with schools

There is no charge to the school or the parent for the courses.

We would ask schools to:

  • Provide a suitable room (free of charge)
  • Provide access to refreshments
  • Display and distribute our publicity
  • Encourage and recruit parents/carers
