Information for Foster Carers - Education

Education

One of our key priorities is promoting the educational needs of Looked After Children. Education is central in protecting and promoting Children and Young People’s life chances.

Prioritising Education

This includes helping children

  • Regularly with their reading
  • Ensuring regular and punctual attendance at school
  • Supporting and encouraging Children and Young People to do their homework and pursue out of school activities and interests
  • Attending school events
  • Liaising closely with the school about key decisions such as subject choice and agreeing targets set out in the Personal Education Plan. This plan is set out to enhance the life chances of Children and Young People who are looked after by Tameside.
  • Carers can convey to Children and Young People on a daily basis that their education is a priority. This includes high expectations and support to achieve them.

The Virtual School

The role of the Virtual School is to offer advice, support and education planning to services involved with the education of Looked After Children in Tameside.

Every Looked After Chid is allocated their own member of the team who will track and support their individually assessed educational needs.

The team offer guidance on the introduction of Personal Education Plans (PEPs) and develop most of the PEPs to enhance the life chances of Looked After Children. They liaise with relevant organisations to maintain children’s educational placements and provide training, advice and information to Designated Teachers, Social Workers and Carers of the Children who are Looked After by the authority.
