Helping You to Live Independently

This page is for anyone who feels that they need help to find somewhere safe and secure to live, where they belong and feel in control of their life. It gives information about the Supporting People programme and how we can help you to live independently.

What is Supporting People?

If you want to live independently but need some support, services are available to you.

Supporting People is a fund that pays for services to give help known as Housing Related Support.

The Supporting People team in Tameside is responsible for making sure that services are available throughout the borough to meet your support needs.

What is Housing Related Support?

Housing related support includes things like:

  • Advice and support on repairs and home improvements
  • Support finding new or different accommodation
  • Help maintaining the safety and security of your property
  • Help managing your money
  • Help claiming benefits and filling in forms
  • Signposting to other organisations who may be able to help you
  • Helping you to understand difficult information

Housing Related Support does not include personal or social care.

Who Can Get Help from Supporting People?

You can get help if you are:

  • A homeless person who needs support
  • A young person in need of support
  • An older person in need of support
  • A person fleeing domestic violence
  • A person with mental health problems
  • A person with a learning disability
  • An offender or ex-offender
  • Someone who needs support to live independently

What Kind of Help Could I Get?

The Supporting People team pay providers to give you housing support. This means you could get help with:

  • Help with day to day jobs like paying bills, filling in forms or making your home safe and secure
  • Help is there if you are young and think you might become homeless
  • Older people in sheltered housing schemes are given support
  • If you need to get away from a domestic violence situation there are temporary hostels

Support can be provided in your own home or other supported accommodation is available.

If you need help to look for somewhere to live, your support provider will be able to help you with this.

How Much Will it Cost Me?

You do not have to pay for the support if:

  • You receive Housing Benefit
  • You need support for a short time (up to 2 years)

The Supporting People team pays the provider directly for the support they provide.

If you need support that is planned to last for more than 2 years and you do not receive Housing Benefit, you may have to pay towards this. A financial assessment will be carried out to find out how much you have to pay, towards the cost of your support.

The service providing your support will help you with this or ring the Supporting People team and ask for a Fairer Charging leaflet.

How Do I Get Help and Support?

The Supporting People team can put you in touch with providers and services across Tameside.

Alternatively, you can ask the Housing Options Team, your Social Worker, Housing Association or nearest Information Office for information on the services that are available to you.

How Can I be Sure I get a Good Service?

The Supporting People team are responsible for improving the quality of support services so your views are important to us. We might ask you what you think about a service:

  • As part of a formal review of your service
  • As part of an organised forum
  • Through consultation with the organisation providing your service
  • Through contact with our team

If you are not happy with the support you are receiving, you should speak to your provider first. If you are still not happy, you can contact the Supporting People team.
