I already live in ordinary sheltered housing – how is Extra Care Housing different?
You have the added benefit of care and support staff available 24 hours a day, either on the premises or on call.
My partner receives care services already and we currently get a bit of help from our family and friends. Could we move into an Extra Care Scheme together?
You can move in together and have a joint tenancy with your partner. Your family and friends can visit and help you as before, with the added support of the on-site care and support staff.
What happens if my health gets worse?
Your needs may change over time, and so your care needs will be reassessed on a regular basis. The care staff will be as flexible as possible to help meet your individual needs.
How long can I live there?
Permanently. Extra Care Housing aims to provide you with a home for life, as long as the care staff are able to meet your needs.
How much does Extra Care Housing cost?
There are four elements to the overall cost of living in Extra Care Housing which are re-assessed annually.
- The cost of renting your home.
- Communal facilities and maintenance charges.
- Cost of the Scheme Manager service and the emergency call system.
- Care charges linked to the amount of care you may be assessed as needing.
In addition you would pay for the usual utility bills such as Council Tax, electricity, water.
Depending on your income, you may qualify for housing benefit for your rent. If you get Housing Benefit or income support you may also be entitled to exemption from Council Tax.
What will it cost me?
The amount you pay for your care will vary depending on your individual financial situation. A financial assessment will be carried out and you may have to pay for all the costs, or you may be entitled to a reduction. When you are considering Extra Care Housing, we can arrange for someone from the Council to visit and discuss confidentially your financial situation. They will let you know what the charges will be and will check to see what benefits you are entitled to claim. If your care and support needs change then your care charges may increase or decrease.
Will I be able to move in with my pet?
Generally pets are made as welcome as their owners! It is important however that you mention you have a pet when you apply in order to check that the accommodation is suitable.
