Housing Services for Older People

Housing Services available to Older People in Tameside

There are several supported housing options open to older people. These are:

Home Improvement Agency

The home improvement agency provides financial assistance to owner occupiers who need essential repairs to their properties. This option is open to older people or people with a disability. The agency can also provide a list of contractors, which are approved to carry out maintenance work.

Community Alarm

The person remains in his or her own home. An alarm system is fitted into the house. The alarm can be pulled if a person is in distress or needs support. This will then go through to a call centre. They will then arrange for assistance, for example a mobile warden may come out or they may call in an ambulance.

Sheltered Housing with Alarm

This option is the same as community alarm however the person moves into a purpose built property. This is rented from a registered social landlord, for example New Charter. This option is available to people aged over 55 (younger disabled people may be considered in some cases). The accommodation is usually a one-bedroom property and will be in an area with other older people.

Sheltered Housing with Manager

This option is rented from a registered social landlord. It is open to people aged over 55 (younger disabled people may be considered in some cases). The accommodation is self-contained and in a block of other properties all of, which are occupied by older people. There is on site security usually in the form of an entry call system. This accommodation is usually a one bedroom flat.

There is a service manager on site. The role of the manager is to ensure the smooth running of the service and also to support the people living there. They will carry out daily checks on individuals to check that everything is okay. They may support people with tasks such as: sorting out benefits, making doctors appointments, liase with carers, relatives. The manager also may organise entertainment or social events in the communal lounge.

There is a communal area where tenants can socialise with other tenants.

Extra Care Housing

This option is open to people over the age of 55 who have some care needs. The accommodation is self-contained and usually has one bedroom. This is rented accommodation. The accommodation will be fully accessible.

There is a service manager in place. They carry out the same functions as in sheltered housing. There is also a team of care workers on site. They provide 24-hour care services to individuals, for example help with bathing, laundry. People moving into the service have to be independent and not in need of nursing care.

Residential Homes

This option is available for people who need care, for example personal care. This accommodation is not self-contained, although you do usually get you own room. Meals are provided for residents.

Nursing Homes

This option is the same as a residential home. There is however nursing care in the service. The nursing staff are able to provide nursing care, for example medication. This service is appropriate for someone who has a lot of care needs, or medical problems.

Other Information


Private Rented Accommodation

If you live in rented accommodation your landlord has to complete repairs. If you have repairs that need completing in your home you need to report these to your landlord. If your landlord does not complete the repairs you need to tell the Enforcement section at Tameside Council. The officers will then take action to make sure the repairs are completed. Housing Options Centre

Tameside has a Housing Options Centre. This provides information to people when their current home has become unsuitable or when they may be at risk of becoming homeless. They can be contacted on 331 2700 for more advice and information.
