What is the Disability Housing Support Service?
The Disability Housing Support Service is part of Supporting People, a central government fund to help people at risk of becoming homeless to live independently.
Who can the Disability Housing Support Service help?
The Disability Housing Support Service is for adults in Tameside (18 – 65 years) affected by loss of mobility, hearing or eyesight. They may be affected by a brain injury, stroke, MS or Cerebral Palsy.
How can the Disability Housing Support Service help?
We offer people help to maintain their tenancies. Support can include:
- find somewhere safe and secure to live

- find suitably adapted accommodation
- deal with eviction notices
- fill in forms
- deal with paperwork
- sort out council tax arrears
- organise paying bills for gas, electricity, water or telephone
- set up utility or bank accounts
- liaise with landlords and Housing Associations
- apply for housing related benefits
How can I get help from this service?
If you are already receiving support from Adult Services, you should contact the Adult Assessment & Customer Support Team at Stalybridge Resource Centre. A Customer Care Officer will assess your needs and refer you to the Disability Housing Support Team if you are eligible.
If you are not already in contact with Adult Services, you can “refer” yourself using our online application form.
On occasions, other agencies may refer customers to the Disability Housing Support Team. Agencies such as Housing Options may have already provided you additional support in the past. They can refer you to our service direct.
What happens when a referral is received?
Once we receive a referral, we will acknowledge it and assess whether we can help you and whether you are eligible for Disability Housing Support. Unfortunately we cannot help everyone. This means that not all applications will be successful. We will let you know of our decision and there is a complaints procedure in place if you are unhappy with the outcome.
We are open:-
Monday - Wednesday: 8.30am - 5.00pm
Thursday: 8.30am - 4.30pn
Friday: 8.30am - 4.00pm
BSL and language support is available if required.
Will I have to wait?
Following referral and assessment, we will tell you when your Disability Housing Support is likely to start. People sometimes have to wait. Priority is given to the people in greatest need.
Can you find me a house?
No. We do not hold housing stock but we can put you in touch with the relevant Housing associations and help you to locate suitable properties.
Can you help me with my benefits?
We are not benefit advisors but can often guide you through the paperwork and complete the relevant forms. If necessary, we can liaise with the different agencies and Welfare Rights Service on your behalf.
How the Disability Housing Support Service has helped people in the past.
Mr E
Mr E age 30 had been involved in a road traffic accident which resulted in a brain injury, he had been in various different hospitals and rehabilitation facilities and was referred to us to assist him to fine a permanent home. We supported Mr E to be accommodated in an extra care housing scheme. We assisted Mr E to organise his finances by applying for benefits, setting up bank account, setting up regular payments for his bills, find a local GP and Dentist, attend rehabilitation and training courses and find a holiday abroad.
Mr J
Mr J became a wheelchair user due to a motorbike accident. We supported Mr J to find suitable accommodation due to his disability. A property suitable for his needs was found Mr J and his family. Mr J was supported to set up payments for utility bills and other services to maintain his property.
Mr P
Mr P was referred to us by Adult Services with severe memory loss following an injury that prevented Mr P returning to his first floor flat. We contacted his landlord on behalf of Mr P who was able to provide Mr P with a ground floor flat within the same building. We helped Mr P to register with a G.P. and apply for a medical assessment. Following intensive support, Mr P is now receiving medical help relating to his memory loss. We are still supporting Mr P to improve his access to services and facilities.
