Werneth Low in the 1920s
From 1838 until 1850 horse races were held on Werneth Low.
The first race course was in the field opposite the Hare & Hounds pub, 6000 people were present on the first day's racing when the prizes ranged from ten to thirty guineas.
The Hare & Hounds was probably the oldest licensed premises in Hyde dating back to at least 1754.
