Flower Power Wins for the Sixth Time!

Press Release Date: 22 October 2010

L-R Gardener Brian Hamilton, Assistant Executive Director Mike Round, Cllr Jacqueline Lane, Gardener Kevin Barber, Operations Manager Mark Porter and Cllr Kevin Welsh celebrate Tameside's In Bloom successIt’s six of the best for Tameside after it was named North West In Bloom Link to External Website winner at this year’s RHS (Royal Horticultural Show) awards ceremony in Southport.

This is the sixth consecutive year for winning and comes hot on the heels of the borough’s recent national success when it was named national champion (city category) last month.

The council also secured a special award for heritage for the way it respects and maintains places such as Park Bridge Heritage Centre and the restoration of Stalybridge Civic Hall. Broadbottom Community Association was also awarded a silver gilt medal in the large village category for their entry.

RHS judges toured Tameside in August and visited numerous locations including Stamford Park, Ashton Town Centre, Park Bridge and Willow Wood Hospice to name but a few.

Cllr Jackie Lane, assistant executive member heritage and tourism, and head of Tameside in Bloom, said: “In Bloom is about so much more than just flowers. You are assessed on all the efforts you make to improve your environment and how you involve the wider community including residents and businesses.

“One our strengths is the contributions made by residents and community groups. Without the driving force of the members of the public who take pride in their area we could never have achieved so much.”

Cllr Kevin Welsh, cabinet deputy and head of district assemblies, said: “This is testament to the dedication and hard work of all our staff and partners - from gardeners to cleansing staff. Indeed they are a major strength of Tameside in Bloom’s success. Our latest win is proof of our talent that we truly are the best in the North West. ”
