In Bloom Judging 2010
In Bloom Judging 2010
Tameside in Bloom are busy bees getting ready for this year’s In Bloom competitions. The North West in Bloom judges will tour the borough on Monday 26th July and the Britain in Bloom judges on Tuesday 10th August. We aim to retain our title as Best City /. Metropolitan Borough in the North West for the sixth time and are going all out to win Britain in Bloom on our third attempt after coming second twice. This year we are competing against Solihull, Aberdeen, Northampton and the London Borough of Islington. There will be 1500 hanging baskets around Tameside and 600 tubs and troughs. In total there will be more than 300,000 plants on the streets of Tameside this summer.
Projects have been carried out across the borough. For example in Stalybridge the metal fencing around the Trinity Street war memorial is being replaced in conjunction with the Tameside Works First initiative. This is to ensure that all the fencing in this area carries a similar design.
On Arlington Link Road in Ashton some old and tired shrubberies have been removed and replaced with turf and trees. This has allowed a more open vista to Ashton Memorial Gardens. The monument which commemorates the border between the Ashton St Michael’s and Ashton St Peter’s parishes has been moved to place it closer to it’s original location and in better view for the public. The original monument is located in Stamford Park and the original location, which is now in the middle of a busy road, is marked with a plaque set into the highway.
We are undertaking extensive wildflower landscaping at Waterloo Park in Ashton. This will provide a colourful display for residents and a habitat for wildlife in a heavily built up area.
We will find out on 29th September whether Tameside is the best in Britain.
This year 25 communities from across Tameside are entering the North West in Bloom It’s your Neighbourhood Awards, an increase from 11 communities last year.
