Countryside Service
Describe a typical working day
Well, there's no such thing really, one of the good points of this job is the
variety, one day I may be working with volunteers on conservation tasks,
or on my own site patrolling, or working with teachers and school groups
etc... so each day is different!
What attracted you to working for us?
In 1989 an assistant warden's job was advertised (we were countryside wardens
in those days) and countryside management was something I was already involved
with in a voluntary capacity, so I applied and got the job.
What advice would you give someone looking for
opportunities in this area?
Get some practical experience, become a volunteer, look out for training courses
and search the internet for countryside jobs and volunteering opportunities.
What qualifications or experience are essential
for this kind of work?
A qualification in countryside management (NVQ 3 or above) or related subject
such as environmental science , forestry, recreation management etc.
What is the best thing about your work?
The variety! The team of professionals and volunteers that I work with. Working
outdoors.
What opportunities does your local authority provide
you that you cannot get elsewhere?
The opportunity to express my individuality within the parameters of my job.
