Tameside Local Agenda 21 Roundtable - Terms of Reference


1. Purpose

  • To provide a forum for discussion of all matters relating to sustainable development and the quality of life in the Borough of Tameside.
  • To give assistance, advise and make recommendations to the Council's Local Agenda 21 Panel on the formulation of a Local Agenda 21 Action Plan.
  • To provide a means for the sharing of knowledge and the dissemination of information concerning the condition of Tameside's environment.
  • To encourage public interest and involvement in all aspects of environmental protection, management and improvement.
  • To co-ordinate the activities of its members and carry out joint action where appropriate.

2. Membership

The membership of the Roundtable shall comprise of representatives of predominantly Borough-wide organisations in a balance between elected members, government agencies, businesses, community groups, transport organisations, environmental and youth groups. The core membership will be:

  • West Pennine Health Authority
  • Environment Agency
  • Tameside Economic Forum
  • Tameside Chamber of Commerce and Industry
  • Trade Union Representative
  • Voluntary Action Tameside
  • Community Matters Tameside
  • School Children's Representative
  • Tameside Transport Consultative Committee
  • Cheshire Wildlife Trust
  • Medlock and Tame Valley Conservation Association
  • Tameside Youth Forum
  • TMBC Elected Members (3).

3. Meetings

The Roundtable shall meet quarterly for a period of twelve months at the end of which time its continued existence will be reviewed.

4. Chairing and Servicing Arrangements

The Roundtable shall be co-chaired by two member organisations, to be elected annually as appropriate. Servicing will be provided by the Council.

5. Topic Working Groups

That the Roundtable shall establish topic Working Groups to bring forward proposals in relation to sustainability issues, whenever this is deemed necessary. A member organisation shall be appointed by the Roundtable to take responsibility for all arrangements in connection with the meeting of a Topic Working Group including the extension of its membership to the wider community.
