Tameside Ladysmith Link

Tameside Ladysmith Link

The links between Tameside and Ladysmith grew out of the significant role played by the Manchester Regiment during the siege of the town and its subsequent relief in February 1900. The people of Ladysmith arranged a comprehensive programme of events between October 1999 and February 2000 to commemorate the siege and relief. The involvement of the Regiment and Tameside Council was seen as important to the success of these events.

In visiting Ladysmith, Council representatives spotted other opportunities for forging links between the two areas. Suggested areas for development include the development of a joint web-site based on the siege of Ladysmith and the Anglo Boer War generally. Hopefully, this would have spin offs for both areas in terms of tourism.

The people of Tameside have already donated books which has resulted in a fully stocked library in one of the townships just outside Ladysmith. In the longer term, further opportunities for developing educational, cultural and economic links between Tameside and Ladysmith will be explored.
