Book Time for Yourself Clubs

Book Time for Yourself Clubs

Tameside's free, friendly and relaxing weekly book clubs for people over 50

a picture of a woman in a library holding a bookWhat are Book Time for Yourself clubs?

The clubs offer a new type of reading experience. They are small and friendly, and meet at various locations across Tameside once a week for an hour and a half.

How do they work?

Library staff and volunteers read short stories, poems and books aloud to the group. Members can simply sit back and listen, or join in discussions about what they have just heard over a cup of tea and a biscuit.

Unlike standard readers’ groups members do not need to read the book or short story in advance before coming to a session, or have had any literary knowledge, making them pressure free.

Who is it for?

Book Time for Yourself clubs are open to anyone over the age of 50 who is looking for the time and space to relax. This can include:

  • people who read regularly, or have never got into reading and want to find out what they have been missing
  • people with a busy schedule who need a break from their daily routine
  • people who want to make new friends and widen their social network
  • people who enjoy lively discussions and sharing their views on books, life, the universe and everything! - though there is no pressure on members to join in discussions.

What sort of things do you read?

Clubs members listen to a mixture of novels, short stories and poems - some old favourites, and some brand new. They choose titles that they can get their teeth into and give lots to talk about. Sessions usually end with an uplifting poem or a reading.

Does it cost anything?

  • Book Time for Yourself Clubs are completely free, you even get a free tea or coffee and biscuits.
  • We regret we cannot provide transport to the clubs.

Where do the clubs meet?

There are 6 Book Time for Yourself Clubs in Tameside.  Come along to the next meeting or contact the Library for more information.
