Activities that Libraries can offer you and your group
Tameside Library Service offers a series of talks and events that are aimed at groups of between 10 - 25 people. These can be either organised community, educational and social groups or a number of friends getting together.
1. Quiz time! (1 hour)
Try a fun quiz. There are four to choose from; general knowledge, books and authors, a Valentines quiz - and a Christmas quiz with mince pies. You might even win a small prize!
2. Remember when... (1 hour)
An opportunity to reminisce over a cup of tea or coffee. Choose
from a) childhood memories b) sports and games c) the way we were.
3. Whodunnit? (1 hour)
Is it murder? Detectives and their sidekicks! Come along with your little grey cells for a super-sleuthing session!
4. Consequences (2 hours)
Try your hand at writing….you never know where it might lead! This is a fun, practical taster session aimed at beginners.
5. Does it need to rhyme? (2 hours)
Share your favourite poems, listen to some poetry and have a go at writing a poem of your own in this informal taster session.
6. Armchair travels (90 minutes)
Visit France or Italy from the comfort of your chair with perhaps a glass of wine to put you in a holiday mood!
7. Card making workshop (90 minutes)
Choose from Christmas, Diwali or Eid. (To help cover the costs of materials, there will be a charge of £1.50 for each person attending this workshop.)
8. Fun for families (1 hour)
Family storytelling – write a story and share it with your children. It’s easier than it seems! Pool your ideas and we’ll write a story together whilst your children draw the pictures. Put it all together and you have a story to share! Choose from one of three themes: pets, animals and football. Aimed at families with children age 5+
9. Stories and crafts (1 hour)
Stories and poems followed by simple crafts. This after - school session is suitable for families who want to share stories with their children. It can be adapted for Brownies, Cubs and similar groups.
10. A tour of the Local Studies and Archives Centre (1 hour)
Take a look behind the scenes, learn how you can trace your family history and find out more about your local area.
11. A tour of Tameside Libraries Information Service (1 hour)
Can’t answer that last crossword clue? Want to know what your holiday hotel is really like? Trying to track down an old friend? Find out more about the range of resources the Information Service can use to answer all your questions. This tour can be adapted to meet your requirements.
12. A tour of the library (1 hour)
A short tour of your local library and an opportunity to ask questions about the service.
Libraries: Denton, Droylsden, Dukinfield, Hyde, and Stalybridge or Tameside Central Library, Information Service and Local Studies Centre. (90 minutes).
13. Skills for Life (90 minutes)
A visit for Skills for Life students and their tutors with a practical skills session based on the Adult Literacy Core Curriculum.
14. ESOL visit (1 hour)
An informal session for people whose first language is not English including a tour of the library and an opportunity to meet staff and ask questions.
How do I organise a visit to the library?
All the workshops listed will take place in a Tameside Library. In most cases, the workshops can be held at your nearest library. They will be run by library staff.
Each workshop lasts between 1 – 2 hours. There is no fee although your group may want to give a small donation towards refreshments.
To arrange a talk or event for your group you simply need to book in advance. Please try to give as much notice as possible.
If you need to cancel a workshop booked for your group please phone and let us know at the earliest opportunity.
