Benefits of Reading

Reading regularly has been shown to benefit us in many different ways. Reading develops the vocabulary, general knowledge, understanding cultural awareness which can lead to improved education and skills levels and employment prospects.

Reading for pleasure often can raise self-esteem and promote wellbeing, helping to overcoming problems such as loneliness and depression. It can also help to keep our minds active as we get older, whether we still read stories and magazines, or listen to audiobooks.

Fostering a love of reading for pleasure in children is therefore really important, but it's never too late to start or improve your reading skills. Tameside Libraries has a range of groups and activities for all sorts of readers.

  • Readers' Groups - If you love reading why not join one of Tameside Libraries Readers' Groups.
  • Book Time for Yourself - Small and friendly groups offering a new type of reading experience.
  • Reading Well - Books on Prescription
  • Quick Reads - Tameside Libraries stock a range of short and engaging books for adult readers by bestselling authors.
  • Reading Ahead - A scheme to support and encourage readers which is particularly help for speakers of other languages and those with reading difficulties. Ask about Reading Ahead at any Tameside LIbrary.
