How do I find out how to get help with long term care?
The Adult Assessment and Customer Care Team at Tameside Adult Services will tell you if you are eligible for services. They will also be able to give you information about other services and private providers.
How can I find out about residential and nursing homes?
Choice provide information on all aspects on residential care homes and nursing homes in Tameside and Glossop. They also stock inspection reports of residential and nursing homes.

Who provides home and community support?
Tameside Adult Services provides home and community support to enable older people to remain living in their own home or the home of a relative or friend with support for as long as possible.
Maddad Ghar provides culturally sensitive home and community support for black and Asian people in Tameside. Referrals are made through Tameside Adult Services Adult Assessment and Customer Care Team.
There are also a number of private providers in the Tameside area.
How do I find out about meals on wheels?
Meals on Wheels is a service that is provided after assessment by Tameside Adult Services. A driver will bring a hot meal once a day for a small charge.
What are Luncheon Clubs?
A Luncheon Club is a facility organised by Adult Services at lunchtime for people of a pensionable age in a community setting. A Luncheon Club encourages people to socialise with others of a similar age and keep their independence, as well as providing tasty food at a reasonable price. More information on Luncheon Clubs.

What if I need help with adaptations in my home?
Tameside Adult Services Adult Assessment and Customer Care Team will be able to help you with any queries regarding adaptations to your home.
After an assessment the Occupational Therapy and Manual Handling Team may then get in touch with you. The Occupational Therapy and Manual Handling Team is part of Tameside Adult Services. The service is available to those people who are residents of Tameside and who have a substantial and permanent physical disability. Their aim is to help people to be as independent as possible in their everyday lives.
How can I find out about the community alarm service?
If you live in your own home but need reassurance, access to emergency assistance and/or support to help you live independently then you may be able to get help from the Tameside Community Alarm Service.
How can I find out about sheltered accommodation?
Sheltered housing is for retired people who wish to remain independent. Accommodation is self-contained with the added benefit of a resident warden.

Housing Associations also provide sheltered and supported housing services. View a list of local housing associations.
Is there any support for my carer?
A carer is someone who looks after a friend, relative or neighbour who needs help because of sickness, age or disability.
The Sitting and Support Service
The Sitting and Support Service is a service run by Tameside Adult Services to help carers to take a break. They use approved agencies to provide a trained care worker to stay with the person you care for while you take time off. They can provide a care worker during the day, evening or over night.
Benefits
Home Responsibilities Protection (HRP) helps you protect your basic Retirement Pension. If you are unable to work or your earnings are low and you have caring responsibilities at home, you may be able to get HRP. For more information visit www.thepensionservice.gov.uk 
Carers Allowance is an allowance for people aged between 16 and over and under 65 who spend 35 hours a week or more caring for someone who is severely disabled. This allowance is dependent on income and may affect other benefits that you are claiming. More information on Carers Allowance is available from Directgov 
What if I am in hospital and feel I cannot look after myself when I go home?
Whilst you are in hospital someone from the Hospital Transfer Service will contact you and assess your needs while you are hospital. If they do not contact you, ask your nurse for more information.
Age Concern in Tameside offer a service to older residents of Tameside/Glossop, usually over 60 years of age, who have been discharged recently from Tameside General Hospital.

Benefits for people with long term illness or disabilities
Under 65's
- Disability Living Allowance (DLA) is a tax-free social security benefit intended for adults and children with a long-term illness or a disability It can be paid in addition to other benefits such as Incapacity Benefit but can also be paid if you are working. More information about DLA.
- Vaccine Damage Payment is a one-off payment if you are severely disabled as a result of a vaccination. More information on Vaccine Damage Payments is available from Directgov

- War Disablement Pension (WDP) is a payment made to people who have been injured or disabled as a result of any service in Her Majesty's Armed Forces. More information on War Disablement Pension is available from the Veterans Agency

Over 65's
- Attendance Allowance is a tax-free social security benefit intended for people with a long-term illness or a disability It can be paid in addition to other benefits such as Retirement Pension. Attendance Allowance can be paid to those who require either attention in connection with certain tasks or supervision in order to stay safe. More information about Attendance Allowance.
