Tameside Council was awarded the ‘Local Innovation Award – Building Economic Resilience’ – in March 2010, the only local authority in the country to receive this award.
The Local Innovation Awards
replaced the Beacon Scheme in 2009. Tameside was awarded 6 Beacons whilst the scheme was active.
Tameside has a strong and well rounded approach to building economic resilience. Centred on the Tameside Works First initiative, the Council has shown innovative approaches to engaging communities, businesses, colleges, schools and individuals.
The Council has been recognised as being particularly strong in its partnership with the third sector and engagement with communities supported by a comprehensive delivery strategy. Tameside has demonstrated outstanding business and community involvement that has proved to be extremely proactive in dealing with the recession issues in the locality.

The key element of the LIA award is the sharing of knowledge, the creation of 'Communities of Practice' and the provision of one to one support to other Local Authorities. Over the next twelve months Tameside are offering a variety of products to support Local Authorities and Partners to help them ‘Build Economic Resilience’. These include ‘downloadable resources’, ‘article 4 peer reviews’, 'How to Guides' and a 'mobile exhibition’. This dissemination is free of charge and can be tailored to fit the needs of individual Authorities.
Tameside’s approach to ‘Building Economic Resilience’ is based around six Key Themes:
