M60 Roadworks
M60 - Weekend Roadworks - Junction 19 to 23
Weekend roadworks are due to commence on the M60 motorway on Friday, 19th June 2009. The works will involve closing sections of the carriageway and diverting traffic onto the opposite carriageway on a contraflow.
Although the roadworks were originally planned for 6 weekends, they are now scheduled to last for at least another 2 weekends (up to 7th August 2009).
On occasions various entry and exit slip roads will also be closed. A 40mph speed restriction will also be in force for the roadworks.
The roadworks are due to cracks that have developed in the surface of the carriageway. Although repairs have been carried out, investigation works needs to be undertaken to understand the cause of the problems, and to fix them.
The works will commence at 9pm on Friday evenings and finish at 5am on Monday mornings.
The works have the potential to cause disruption and delays.

M60 Weekend Roadworks
between Junction 19 and Junction 23, Middleton to Ashton-under-Lyne
We need to carry out investigation work on the M60 Motorway between Junctions 19 and 23.
The work will be carried out over six weekends starting on 19th June 2009.
What needs investigating?
Surface cracks have developed on the M60 motorway between Junction 19 (Middleton) and Junction 23 (Ashton-under-Lyne).
We have carried out repairs, but in the long term the problems affecting this section of road will continue to occur unless we find a solution to the causes of the cracking.
The investigation work will help us to understand the cause of these problems and to fix them.
When will we be doing the work?
We'll carry out our investigations over six weekends this summer, between 9pm on Friday evenings and 5am on Monday mornings.
Weather permitting we'll begin on Friday 19th June 2009. If all goes to plan the final weekend of work will begin on Friday 24th July 2009.
How will we manage traffic?
To ensure the safety of drivers and our workforce we'll be closing sections of the road between Junctions 19 and 23.
To enable one side of the motorway to be fully closed for the weekend, we will close lanes and move traffic to run on the opposite carriageway. There will also be a speed restriction of 40mph to ensure driver and road worker safety.
We will also need to close various entry and exit slip roads. Diversion routes will be clearly signed.
Our Traffic Officers will be conducting extra patrols to help keep the traffic moving and road users safe.
As the work progresses you'll be able to get more information in the local press, on our dedicated DAB radio channel and online at www.trafficradio.org.uk.
How will the work affect my journey?
We expect that there will be some significant delays. We are asking drivers to avoid this section of the M60 if possible to minimise disruption to journeys.
If you need to travel on this section of motorway while the restrictions are in place, allow extra time for your journey, especially if you need to be at your destination at a specific time.
If you are travelling beyond Junction 19 or Junction 23, disruption to your journey can be minimised by using the western section of tile M60 instead.

Safety at roadworks - THINK
The highways agency is working with the industry and road users to reduce the risks of working on the roads.
For the safety of roadworkers and all road users, when you are approaching roadworks:
- Keep within the speed limit.
- Get into the correct lane in good time - don't keep switching.
- Concentrate on the road ahead, not the roadworks.
- Be alert for works' traffic leaving or entering roadworks.
- Keep a safe distance - there could be queues in front.
- Observe all signs - they are there to help you.
If you need help using this or any other Highways Agency information, please call 08457 50 40 30 and we will assist you
