Manual Handling Services
We provide a wide range of training, support, advice and risk assessment in manual handling. This training is to ensure that all care providers are able to meet the Statutory Health and Safety requirements for their staff group.
Training
The Tameside Manual Handling Passport was developed in 2009.
The overall aim of the Passport looks at consistency in manual handling provision, a more effective use of resources and improvements in the health and wellbeing of staff, whilst meeting legal requirements and reducing levels of handling risk across the Borough.
We firmly believe that the key to the success of this initiative is the involvement of all those who have an interest in preventing manual handling injuries in the workplace, and want to develop good practise.
The Manual Handling Training Passport lays down specific learning outcomes and these must be satisfied to meet the passport standards.
Staff will only need to attend the modules appropriate to their job role.
Training will be delivered in modules and each module will have an assessment of competency.
Training can be accessed through the Organisational Development Department and may be subject to a charge. We provide training to the following people;
- All TMBC Staff
- Private Agencies
- Individuals
- Education
- Personal assistants (i.e. Direct Payments)
Assessments
This Service is provided to Tameside residents who meet the eligibility criteria
Advice
Manual Handling Advice is always available from either the Training Officers or the Manual Handling Assessors. See below for contact details.
Equipment
A manual handling assessment may result in a range of equipment being recommended. Formal carers (paid) will use this equipment and they will follow a handling plan. Advice from the manual handling team is available.
Informal (unpaid) carers may also use manual handling equipment. It is usually the occupational therapist that provides advice to informal carers but it may be in liaison with a manual handling assessor.
How can I get a manual handling assessment?
The first step is to contact your social worker/assessor. You will need to explain what difficulties you are having and they will process the request. If you don't have a social worker/assessor you should contact Adult Services, if you prefer you can ask a friend or relative to make contact on your behalf.
