What are community meals?
Community meals are available to Tameside residents who have been assessed as needing meals delivered to their homes. We offer a 7-day service and will deliver meals between 12.00pm and 1.30pm. There are 3 menu choices every day which will be discussed with you in advance.
Tameside Council used to provide the Meals on Wheels Service, but from October 2009 ICare
, a Community Meal Service will be delivering them to you.
Who will deliver your meal?
A regular driver will bring the meal. However, there will be occasions when there is a relief driver. Please ask to see their identification badge before letting them into your home.
When will your meal be delivered?
Your meal will be delivered between 11am and 2pm on the days that we have arranged for you to receive a meal. The meal will consist of a hot main course for immediate consumption, or, if you prefer frozen meals for later re-heating and a dessert.
What if you are going to be out?
If you have a hospital or doctor's appointment, or you are going to be out for whatever reason, please let us know that you do not need a meal preferably before 9.30am.
We do need to know if you are going to be out. If we cannot deliver your meal, we have to contact your relatives, friends or neighbours to make sure nothing has happened to you.
You can either tell the driver or contact Community Meal Service Monday to Sunday on 0161 343 3056.
What will you have to pay?
We will let you know the cost of your meal. The meals are subject to an annual price increase which we will let you know about in writing.
You can be invoiced every 4 weeks and pay by cheque, alternatively arrangements can be made for your invoices to be sent to relatives for payment if you have difficulties dealing with finances. You may prefer to pay by Direct Debit through your bank account.
If you prefer to pay your driver with cash or cheque for your meals they will issue you with a receipt for the monies. if you do choose to pay this way please pay for your meals weekly on either Monday or Friday.
Other suggestions to help you stay healthy
Healthy Eating - Eating a wide variety of foods can improve your quality of life and
will protect you from nutrient deficiencies.
Eat Regularly - Missing meals, or eating unhealthily will make you feel tired, depressed and cold.
Food Safety - never reheat your meal. If you have frozen meals once heated do not re-heat again.
Keep Active - Keeping active increases your strength and flexibility. Any form of light exercise is beneficial to your health and well-being.
Drink plenty of fluids - you need six to eight cups of fluid each day. This can be any beverage such as water, tea, coffee, fruit juice, squash and milk.
Keep warm in winter - keep your home between 21 and 24 degrees centigrade (70 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit). Wrap up warmly indoors by wearing several layers of thin clothing.
Keep safe - keep doors and windows secure and use a door chain. Always ask for identification. If you do not know who is at the door, do not answer it.
