Metrolink Press Release

Metrolink - All Tameside Needs is the Track

Council bosses felt they had to act after the government pulled the plug on the Metrolink Phase 3 scheme, claiming that the costs were spiralling out of control.

Tameside Council, along with other Greater Manchester councils, held a rally in September 2004 in protest at the decision. Photographs and video footage from the day is below.

If the scheme is given the green light it has been estimated that it would attract up to six million passengers a year, saving an estimated two million car journeys. The scheme is also a vital component of the regeneration of East Manchester and Tameside.

Work that has already been completed in anticipation of the scheme includes:

  • The building of a new school in Droylsden (St Mary's)
  • Demolition of residential properties at the Snipe and Edge Lane in Audenshaw and Droylsden
  • Demolition of residential flats in Ashton and construction of replacement flats
  • Purchase and demolition of a petrol station near the Snipe
  • Widening of the M60 Ashton Northern Bypass Bridge to accommodate Metrolink Demolition of industrial properties in Wellington Road , Ashton
  • New railway bridge
  • Widening of motorway and railway bridges to accommodate Metrolink
  • Purchase of commercial properties.
  • The completion of the Metrolink extension into Tameside is fundamental to the economic and social well-being in the 21st century.

More recently the Government has confirmed that a budget of £520 million is back on the table for public transport in Ashton, Droylsden and East Manchester, Oldham and Rochdale; South Manchester and Manchester Airport via Wythenshawe and the spur to Didsbury Metrolink corridors.

Tameside Council continues to work with the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive and the other nine Greater Manchester councils on our proposals, bidding for extra funding from the Government's Transport Innovation Fund.
