Tameside Open Art 08
5 July – 6 September 2008
231 art works in one gallery….
The Tameside Open Art Exhibition goes on the walls this week. This annual exhibition has been a favourite in the gallery calendar for many years.
Unlike other Open Art Exhibitions, the Tameside Open Art exhibition has no selection procedure, so it is an opportunity for anyone who lives in the borough to get their art works on the walls of the gallery. This year we have
received 230 art works – which shows the interest in art and creative talent in Tameside is at an all time high.
The Open Art exhibition is a great chance to see the quality of work being produced by amateur artists within the borough. Paintings range from traditional watercolours to more abstract oils of a variety of subjects around the
borough. There are also photographs, and mixed media work.
The exhibition has been hung in themes this year in the following groups:
Land and urban views, still life, wildlife, abstract work and finally the human figure. This gives the visitor a real chance to compare and contrast different styles of artwork on a similar subject.
The exhibition is an inspiration to anyone to pick up a paintbrush and have a go!
Most of the work within the exhibition is for sale at very reasonable prices.

Portraits
Sketches and paintings by Martin Palmer
1 August – 1 November 2008
Preview and Master Class with Martin Palmer 31 July 6-8pm.
For many years Tameside artist, Martin Palmer has been something of a local secret. He has built a reputation for his detailed local landscapes, but even less will be aware of his talent for sketching and painting the people around him.
Working primarily in watercolour and ink, he is adept at capturing the moment. There is spontaneity of line and movement in his sketches, whilst his paintings are carefully considered and detailed studies of both the sitter and the background.
Martin says of his work:
"These pictures are of colleagues of mine, and I am trying to match the technique, medium and mood - to the style and personality of the sitter. I attempt to bring out the reflective side of any portrait subject; without too much caricature, but the emphasis is definitely on lighting and likeness - over any kind of abstract or picture-making concerns. I hope to convey the sitters as they see themselves."
Martin Palmer has for many years taught art at West Hill High School. He has previously exhibited locally and has work in the Astley Cheetham Art Collection.
Martin Palmer will be in the gallery sketching visitors during August. For more information, see contact details below.
