About one quarter are medals, which reflect the service of some 800 individuals, over the past 250 years. These medals include those earned for service, bravery, sporting success and temperance.

The medals span the ages, from service in the French West Indies, during the early 1800’s, through to those awarded for service in Northern Ireland, Iraq and Afghanistan today.

Six of the fourteen Victoria Crosses (VCs), earned by men of the Regiment, are on display in the Museum along with a wide range of other Gallantry Awards such as the Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM) and Military Medal (MM).

The Man Behind The Medals Project

Soon we will all learn more about the personal story attached to each one of these medals.

Thanks to a grant from the Esmée Fairbairn Collections Fund Link to External Website the museum has started to research the life and times of each of these individuals.

Once this 18-month project is complete, in Summer 2013, we aim to make all the stories available on-line through our website as well as in the Museum.

We are encouraging anyone who has donated medals, or who has relatives whose medals are in the collection, to come forward with any additional information, photographs or documents about that person.

This ‘Medal Roll’ is a list of the medals currently held in the Museum’s Collection. This list does not include sports, temperance or other prize awards held by the Museum.

Once you have found a man’s surname you can find his medals in the location listed. Some medals are in the reserve collection, located off-site and can be viewed by appointment*.

Once each man’s story has been researched a biography of each man will be accessible through this webpage.

The details recorded on this medal roll are those that appear on the man’s actual medal (s). Abbreviations have been used in places for consistency and conciseness. For more information please contact the Curator.
