Welcome

The Rutherford Gallery is a new art gallery in Hyde, exhibiting work by Harry Rutherford, a nationally renowned artist who came from the Tameside area. His career was long and varied, working initially as a draughtsman and then training with the eminent artist Walter Sickert.

The Rutherford Gallery is situated in Hyde Library and is a celebration of a 20th century master, an artist whose talent allowed him to experience many avenues of artistic life. The works on display span his entire artistic career. Many have never been on public display before. To accompany the exhibition space there is a dedicated gallery education room which provides opportunities for school and community groups to learn about Rutherford and develop their own artistic skills.

Planning a Visit

The Rutherford Gallery is situated in Hyde town centre, just outside of Manchester, accessible by car and bus. There is a pay and display car park next to the library building with disabled parking spaces just outside the main entrance. There are gallery activities within the exhibition and we offer a programme of school holiday activities for families. Please phone the gallery for more information on 0161 342 4289.

Current exhibition: Pocket PicturesSmall pub drawing by Harry Rutherford

Previously unseen drawings by Harry Rutherford
Until Spring 2012

In the Summer of 2011 the Rutherford Gallery received a loan of over 1000 small pub drawings, 137 sketch books and just over 360 individual drawings, all done by Harry Rutherford. Most of these drawings have never before been on public display.

Staff have slowly been going through the drawings identifying locations and simply numbering this vast loan.

‘Pocket Pictures’ literally opens up the artist’s sketchbooks for the first time. And what shines though is Rutherford’s incredible eye for detail and swift hand.

Harry’s party trick of sketching whilst keeping the pencil and paper in his pocket is evidenced in these small sketches. According to the artist himself, the trick was honed by having to work in the dark during the many BBC television programmes he participated in.
