Neighbourhood Policing in Tameside

Photograph of PCSO with Neighbourhood Policing SignIn October 2006, Greater Manchester Police changed the way they worked and moved to Neighbourhood Policing to better meet the needs of our communities.

Key to the Neighbourhood Policing model is a bottom-up approach to prioritising local issues. PACT (Partners and Communities Together) meetings are now held monthly across the Borough and are used by identified community representatives, and representatives from partner agencies such as Tameside Patrollers and Registered Social Landlords, residents’ associations and local Councillors to discuss community safety issues and agree solutions.

PACTs tackle issues crime as well as ‘signal crimes’, for example, youth nuisance, minor damage and graffiti, which can have a negative impact on the public’s perception of security in their neighbourhoods.

There are four local policing areas in Tameside, which are each headed up by an Inspector and two sergeants. The policing areas are then broken down into wards, aligned with Council wards. Each ward is headed up by a Community Beat Officer (CBO), plus there are two PCSOs per ward, with further support from Special Constables and Tameside Patrollers.

There are a total of 19 wards in Tameside as follows:

  • North Neighbourhood covering Waterloo, Hurst, Town Centre and St Peter’s and St Michaels.
  • South Neighbourhood covering Hyde Newton, Hyde Godley, Hyde Werneth and Longdendale.
  • East Neighbourhood covering Mossley, Stalybridge North, Stalybridge South, Dukinfield and Stalybridge and Dukinfield.
  • West Neighbourhood covering Droylsden West, Droylsden East, Audenshaw, Denton West, Denton North East and Denton South.

Reporting Crime

If you want to report a crime to the Police, call 999 in an emergency only.  For all other enquiries call 0161 872 5050.  You can report a crime to Crimestoppers free and anonymously on 0800 555 111.  If you do call the Police, always ask for a Force Wide Incident Number (FWIN).

When you are reporting an incident, remember the 4 Ws:

What – what exactly did you see and what were you doing? Try and remember what you actually saw, not what you think you saw

Who – who did you see? Try to take note of approximate age and height, gender and ethnicity. Try also to remember what the person was wearing

When – when was the incident? Remember to take a note of the time

Where – where was the incident? Have a look around – if you don’t know the street look for a landmark like a pub or a shop
