Tameside Olympic Legacy Strategy
Delivering an Olympic Legacy for Tameside
|
The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games will act as a catalyst and an inspiration for people to become involved in a whole range of sporting and cultural activities. Part of the vision of the Organising Committee for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games is to ensure that we not only inspire more people to get involved, but that they leave a lasting legacy where people continue to be involved in sports and cultural activities for many years to come. Although the games seems a long way off, the reality is that they will come around quickly and Tameside has recognised this by establishing an Olympic Legacy group. The action plan that the group has developed means that planning is already in place to ensure that Tameside makes the most of the opportunity that the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games provides, showcasing the borough and the Olympics through a programme of events leading up to 2012. |

National Perspective
The Department of Culture Media and Sport ‘Before, During and After : Making the most the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games’ strategic document defines the 2012 legacy as the imprint the games will leave, not just what happens after the games, but what happens before and during them to inspire individuals and organisations to strive for their best, to try new activities, forge new links or develop new skills.
One of the five promises that the Department of Culture, Media and Sport published in June 2007 was to ensure that the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games inspired a generation of young people to get involved in local activities that are inspired by the games linked to the Cultural Olympiad.

Local Perspective
The Tameside Olympic Legacy group was established to ensure that Tameside had a strategic and co-ordinated approach to ensuring engagement for the Tameside population in sport and cultural activities in the run up to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. This has been achieved by the production of an action plan which will showcase Tameside and the Olympics through a programme of events in the lead up to London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games which are sustainable and increase participation.
Sport & Physical Activity
The Tameside Olympic Legacy Action plan highlights key areas for development including increasing adult participation in sport and physical activity, supporting sport club development by encouraging local clubs to establish Olympic themed sessions and working with the education sector to promote involvement in sport and physical activity in schools and colleges.
‘As a young ambassador for sport I have really enjoyed being able to go into primary schools and inspire young children talking about my experiences in sport’ Hannah Mitchell, World Junior Sailing Champion & Tameside Young Ambassador
Cultural Olympiad

The Tameside Olympic Legacy Action plan brings together all sectors of culture to share best practice and develop opportunities for local people to access sport and cultural activities including living libraries and museum based London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games themed events.
“The arts workshops have been a great success with everyone thoroughly enjoying themselves.” Children’s Fund Project
Skills and Volunteering
The Tameside Olympic Legacy Action Plan highlights the need to develop a volunteering network that can support the development of a number of activities linked to Tameside's 2012 legacy. The plan includes actions that support the development of both adult and young cultural ambassadors and the provision of training opportunities for people in priority regeneration neighbourhoods.
Tameside has an excellent reputation for the provision of sport and cultural activities involving a wide range of partners and agencies that have a significant impact on the health and well-being of its population. The Olympic legacy group, made up from the representatives from across the Tameside Council Cultural and Customer services, aims to generate a positive Olympic legacy in Tameside through cultural and sports participation, that remains beyond the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, by delivering actions under four main objectives.
