News & Media

Park Café stars on TV
The Park Café was on TV on the 3rd, 4th & 6th August 2009. BBC North West News featured it in a series of items over three nights where they chronicled the setting up of the Park Café by following the scheme and the people involved from the initial building works, developing the business plan, staff training to the public opening which was broadcast live on the BBC. They revisited the project on 16th December following viewers’ requests for an update.
Below are a number of video's which feature The Park Café.

Healthy eating at The Park Café
We recently achieved a Gold Award from the Healthy Choice Awards; which highlighted ways in which we could improve further. Our winter menu 2010introduces lots of ideas to help you make a healthy choice including, use of low fat spreads and dressings. We have removed from sale crisps and confectionery and introduced healthier options such as nuts and seeds, low fat spreads and dressings.
What is the Haggle ‘n’ Barter scheme?
The café supports and promotes further social and micro enterprises, such as the ‘Haggle ‘n’ Barter’ concept. The scheme encourages people to grow their own produce and swap it for someone else’s. Whether you have an allotment, garden or window box start growing produce now!
In March 2009 staff and helpers went to the Farmers Market in Ashton to publicise the scheme to the public.

The café and Haggle ‘n’ Barter promotes local and seasonal food; therefore we have developed links with local allotments including Mottram Rd and Hyde Park. Volunteers from the allotments give us plenty of advice about our Haggle ‘n’ Barter scheme and have helped kick start this fantastic initiative. We hope to work closely with more allotments in the near future.
We aim to recycle as much waste as possible. Our green waste, cans, plastic and glass is all recycled. Even our ground coffee is given away in the Haggle ‘n’ Barter room. This helps to improve nitrogen content in compost. The Recycling Team supported our Christmas Fair theme and the horse ‘n’ cart made an appearance too.
In the Haggle ‘n’ Barter room we are currently collecting:
- Jam jars
- Corks
- Pine cones
- Haberdashery items
Please contact Dawn Barlow on 0161 366 5082 for the latest Haggle ‘n’ Barter updates or better still visit Dawn and her team in the Haggle ‘n’ Barter room.
(Haggle ‘n’ Barter testimonial) “This is just what we need in these difficult times: things like this really bring the community together; it reminds me of the 1950’s – people really pulled together then”
