Standard bearer, Branch Chairman from Denton Royal British Legion at the serviceTameside will celebrate the heroes of our armed forces on Saturday 26 June 2010 with the Tameside Armed Forces Day event which will take place in Victoria Park, Denton from 1.00pm to 4.00pm. The day will be an opportunity to show your support for the contribution made by all those who serve or have served in Her Majesty’s Armed Forces.

A short parade led by Adamson Military Band External Link will depart at 1.00pm from Denton Town Hall and will make its way through Victoria Park to the park’s war memorial where a short service, led by the Reverend Shirley Harrison (Priest-in-Charge at Christ Church, Denton) will be held. During the afternoon there will be performances from the bandstand including the Adamson Military Band, War-time tribute singer Heather Marie External Link, Rat pack tribute singer Frank Forde External Link and Falklands veterans Andy Farrell and Darren Poyzer External Link who will bring to the event a dramatic performance of poetry and song. Self-penned, powerful and emotionally driven, they deliver a vital and powerful insight into the human condition during the Falklands conflict.

Throughout the afternoon there will be a variety of free activities available including a climbing wall, face painting, clay modelling and craft activities with displays and demonstrations from The Manchester Regiment 1914-1918 Living History Society External Link. Members of the Royal British Legion, local Air Cadets External Link, Scouts, Cubs, Girl Guides, Brownies and Rainbows will also be present on the day.

Denton Homing Society will be joining in this year's celebrations by releasing a number of pigeons prior to the official service, to acknowledge the significance of the important role that pigeons played during World War One. They proved to be an extremely reliable way of sending messages. Such was the vital role of pigeons, that over 100,000 were used in the war with an astonishing success rate of 95% getting through to their destination with their message.

Refreshments will be available during the afternoon from Victoria Park Community Centre.

Everyone welcome.
