Best Ever Road Safety Figures

Best Ever Road Safety Figures

School walking buses are among the many measures used to promote road safety in Tameside.Tameside roads are getting safer - with accident figures at an all time low.

Figures just released indicate that, last year, 651 people were injured in 444 collisions on the borough’s roads.

This is the eighteenth year running that road casualties have declined and the latest statistics represent an almost 50% reduction in injuries since the record high in 1990 when 1288 casualties where reported.

The downward trend in road accidents has been achieved despite an 11 per cent increase in traffic over the last ten years, showing that Tameside Council’s ongoing work to improve road safety is making a real difference.

Executive Member for Technical and Engineering Services Cllr Alan Whitehead said: “Whilst it is obviously good news that fewer people than ever are being injured in road collisions, we must not become complacent about this and we remain mindful of the heartache and human cost behind these figures.

“We are continuing to target vulnerable road user groups with educational campaigns and we are always looking to make collision hot-spots safer.

“With the hard work of all of the organisations involved in the road safety partnership – coupled with the commitment and assistance of road users – we will continue to strive to keep the road casualties on a downward trend.”

Initiatives to target road user groups in 2009 included:

  • Continued development of 20mph zones in residential areas
  • The introduction of pedestrian refuges, anti skid treatments, traffic signal and pedestrian crossing upgrades
  • Encouraging schools to use the ‘safer routes to school’ package and enhancing road safety outside schools through the school frontage initiatives
  • Road Safety programme of education, training and publicity with initiatives such as walking buses and targeted campaigns such as the seat belt wearing initiative.
