Black Knight Fair
Saturday 25 September 2010 - 11am to 3pm
Press Release Date: 17 September 2010

The infamous Sir Ralph de Assheton returns to Ashton on Saturday 25 September for the famous Black Knight Fair.
For one day Ashton Market will become the site of a medieval fair which traditionally gathered people from the whole area to buy and sell goods and have a great time with family and friends – much the same as today.
But the event will recall the legendary days when the fearsome Sir Ralph, the all-powerful lord of the manor, would ride through the agricultural village of Ashton clad in black armour.
The fair proved very popular last year, so Tameside Council is staying faithful to the formula. Included this time are stalls and jesters, storytellers and re-enactment groups, arts and crafts, and the ever-popular face-painting for youngsters.
Cllr Joyce Bowerman, chair of Ashton District Assembly, said: “Last year was a great success with something for everyone.
“It seems that our history and heritage continue to be a very popular theme and I was impressed by the knowledge and historical accuracy of the re-enactment people. It was great to see so much interest from the young people. I am sure that this year will be no different.
“The event promotes Ashton across the whole region and attracts visitors from far and wide. That has got to be good for businesses and it keeps us in the forefront as a visitor town.”
