Denton's New Square Unveiling
A multi-jet water feature is the focal point of Denton’s new civic square, which was officially opened on 7th November 2008.
The scheme forms the town's final and most impressive piece of the public realm improvements, which have been made possible with the help of contributions from developer’s Reeb, following the construction of Crown Point North Shopping Centre.
The new square includes a dry plaza fountain, high quality paving materials, seating, new street lighting, landscaped areas and parking lay-bys. It has been designed to be a multi-functional area and will be a natural meeting place for seasonal events such as the Christmas lights switch on.
It has been designed by Tameside Council’s Architectural and Engineering Design teams with assistance from Taylor Young Architects. The works were undertaken by the Engineering Operations Division, including a number of Modern Apprentices who have gained invaluable experience by working on such a prestigious project.
Cllr Martin Wareing, of Denton North East Ward, unveiled a commemorative engraved stone block in the square. He said: “Denton's new civic square provides a high quality open space in the heart of the town centre for ourselves and future generations to be proud of."
Chair of the Denton Town Centre Business Group Cllr Vincent Ricci said "We are all committed to making Denton and Tameside an attractive and environmentally friendly place to live, work and visit and to make the area a cleaner, greener, more accessible place for current and future generations to enjoy”.
