Cemetery’s green flag success
Cemetery’s Green Flag Success
Denton Cemetery has joined the list of the country’s best parks and green spaces for the third year running.
The site, managed by Tameside Council Bereavement Services, is one of ten locations across the borough to receive a Green Flag Award - the national standard for quality parks and green spaces.
Winners are judged to be welcoming and well maintained with the support and involvement of the local community. Bereavement Services aim to eventually achieve this status for all local cemeteries.
Tameside Council Executive Member for Environmental Services Cllr Catherine Piddington said: “This award shows our commitment in ensuring that our cemeteries are kept to the best standards possible. Many of the standards within the Green Flag Award mirror Tameside Council’s key priorities such as creating an attractive borough and ensuring a safe environment for all. I am delighted that we have achieved this award again for a third time.”
Senior Registrar Michael Gurney said: “it is a credit to all the staff who have been involved and it is now our intention to apply for a Green Flag for Dukinfield Cemetery next year and eventually for all eight of the cemeteries within the borough.”
To be eligible for a Green Flag Award sites must be freely accessible to the public and perform well against the following eight criteria:
- A welcoming place
- Healthy, Safe and Secure
- Clean and well maintained
- Sustainability
- Conservation and Heritage
- Community involvement
- Marketing
