HRH The Duchess of Cornwall met and congratulated the pupils of Canon Burrows CE primary school Link to External Website yesterday (4th February 2010), who had won a national environmental competition.

The school beat nine other finalists in a national competition to reduce waste in schools. The ‘Wipe Out Waste’ competition was organised by Footprint Friends, the eco social-networking site. The school was awarded with a powerPerfector unit, which was officially switched on by The Duchess. This ‘green box’ will help Canon Burrows to become a more environmentally friendly school by reducing the amount of electricity it uses.

To win the award, the children had to present a ‘green’ idea of how schools can look after the environment by reducing waste. The winning concept was a unique pencil grip which extends the life of pencils normally thrown away when they have been half used. On hearing of the young team’s idea powerPerfector committed to financing the design of a prototype that was shown to the school during the visit.

During the visit pupils performed a special assembly with singing and dancing with a theme of “We are a small part of the world, but making a positive difference.”

The Duchess then had a whistle-top tour of classrooms talking with pupils working on projects about recycling, global warming and looking after wildlife.

The pupils have been working in the school grounds and local community for over 25 years to maintain and improve the environment for everybody. They have led the way in raising awareness of the importance of preserving and caring for the world.

Their work has been recognised by the achievement of many awards, including the first DCSF Teaching Award for Education for Sustainable Development and five ECO flags. The school actively seeks ways to reduce carbon emissions and have recently installed a green roof and solar panels.

The Duchess said she’d mention the school’s work to her husband and said she’d love to visit again. The visit ended with a special storytelling session by Taffy Thomas, the new National Storytelling Laureate.
