Chinese New Year Celebrations 2010
Tameside's Chinese New Year Celebrations
Saturday 13th February 2010
Tameside Council celebrated Chinese New Year with a host of free activities and performances in both Ashton Town Centre and at Tameside Central Library and Tameside Central Art Gallery to help celebrate the Year of the Tiger.
Firstly, from Tameside Central Library and Art Gallery an exciting selection of family friendly activities took place throughout the day, such as Chinese arts and crafts and Kung Fu Fan Dance workshops, and Chinese food tasting.
Northern Dragons (Manchester)
led the Lion Dance parade from the Library, along Old Street, through the Ladysmith Shopping Centre
and into the Civic Square. Many children and families joined the parade with colourful Chinese lanterns and masks made earlier in the day.
Following this, the Civic Mayor, Councillor John Sullivan, blessed the Chinese lion and wished everyone Kung Hei Fat Choy (Happy New Year), prior to a wonderful and colourful lion dance that entertained the crowds.
There were also exciting performances from the Ling Chinese Entertainers, including ribbon and fan dance, martial arts, acrobatics, fantastic pot juggling, free face painting and Chinese massage.
