Junior Chefs Seek Recipe for Success
Press Release Date: 6 February 2012
Watch out John Torode and Nadia Sawalha. Tameside is about to crown its own Junior MasterChef.
As part of National Apprenticeship Week
, pupils from nine of the borough’s high schools will be competing at Tameside College
, Ashton-under-Lyne, on Monday, 6 February 2012. The winner will get the title and a cheque for £50 while the rest will receive certificates of achievement.
The cooking gets under way at 10am. Within two hours each competitor must create a starter using a box of healthy ingredients, and their own choice of main course. The contestants will all have one of the college’s hospitality and catering apprentices for support and guidance, but the food preparation will be all their own.
Between noon and 12.45pm they will have to plate up and add the final presentational touches, ready for judging by the Civic Mayor of Tameside, Cllr Susan Quinn, and a professional chef.
Presentation of prizes will take place between 1.15 and 1.30pm.
Cllr Ged Cooney, Tameside Council’s Executive Member for Learning and Achievement, said: “Competitions like this demonstrate both our commitment to spreading the good word about apprenticeships, the breadth of the curriculum in our schools and the qualities of our young people.
“I’m sure the food produced will be tasty, healthy, and just as good as anything you might see on the BBC’s ‘Junior MasterChef’ programme.”
