Representatives for the Greater Manchester Mini Games 2008
Greater Manchester Mini Games 2008
Tameside Sports Development are well underway with identifying our Primary School representatives for the above annual event. Canon Burrows, Ashton and Mottram Primary have won the honour to represent Tameside in next year's Games in Trafford, competing in girls football and mixed rugby competitions. They will be competing against similar teams from Manchester, Oldham, Stockport and Trafford.
Another 7 competitions are being held over the coming months to find the other 7 schools to join Canon Burrows and Mottram Primary next year in Trafford. The other sports are netball, hockey, athletics, basketball, gymnastics, tennis and the disability multi skills and athletics.
Tameside Schools' TAG Rugby Tournament
Mottram Primary school overcame 36 Tameside primary schools, and 45 teams, to lift the Tameside schools TAG Rugby crown after defeating Parochial in a closely fought final at Aldwinians Rugby Club last Wednesday (31st October 2007).
Clearly the excitement of the recent World Cup did much to feed the enthusiasm of the local children participating in the most popular Tag Rugby Tournament yet organised by Tameside Sports Development. Chief organiser, Andy Deakin, stated that he was impressed by the overall standard of play, admitting that the boys did not have all their own way in the side stepping stakes as a number of girls jinked their way over the tryline.
The tournament was divided into 3 heats, one at each of the 3 local Rugby Union Clubs (Ashton, Dukinfield and Aldwinians) before the 10 finalists played off for the trophy last Wednesday. Hopefully all three of our local clubs will benefit from the success through extra numbers attending their junior coaching sessions.
Tameside Primary Schools' Girls Football Indoor 5 a-side Competition
This competition, organised by Tameside's Sports Development Unit, proved to be a great success. In all, 34 teams participated from 26 schools with heats taking place at secondary school venues around the borough, through which 8 schools qualified for the finals at Copley Sports Centre last Wednesday (10th October 2007).
The finals proved to be be very close and competitive, with the girls displaying a high standard of performance, and culminating in a Final game between Aldwyn and Canon Burrows. Chances came and went for both sides before Canon Burrows scored the vital goal which clinched the trophy.
The success of this competition demonstrates the growing popularity of girls football and hopefully all the participants will be enthused to develop their skills at the range of girls football clubs in the area.
