Harvest & Scarecrow Festival on it way

Harvest & Scarecrow Festival on it way

Saturday 11 September

Press Release Date: 3 September 2010

Hyde’s Harvest and Scarecrow Festival takes place on Saturday 11 September in Hyde Town Centre and at The Park Cafe, Bayley Hall in Hyde Park, between 10 and 3pm.

Organised by Tameside Council’s Theatre Arts Team and The Park Café with support from Operation Farm - an active network of allotment projects - the festival is to celebrate the very best of summer produce and the arrival of the autumn season.

There will be food demonstrations and food stalls. Visitors can pick up gardening, composting and recycling advice and bring along their own produce to buy and swap.

Up to 120 scarecrows will decorate the park and Hyde Town Centre with ‘Famous Characters’ as their theme so organisers hope to see everything from ‘The Simpsons’ to ‘Coronation Street’! The message is ‘be creative’.

There will be plenty of fun for the kids, including a traditional Punch & Judy stall, real-life story telling scarecrows, apple press and a marquee dedicated to kids’ play; where they can dine on hay bales. Music from Celtic Belt, Patchwork and Mossley St John's Brass Band is guaranteed to get everyone in the festive mood. There will be a bouncy castle, land train and Hyde Park has a great play area.

Cllr Lynn Travis, Executive Member for Personal and Community Services said: “This promises to be a great day out for all the family. This festival is a ‘first’ for us and we’re really looking forward to it. It will give local people a chance to show off their creative talents whether it’s making scarecrows or swapping fruit and vegetables they’ve grown. We hope it will make local people feel pride in their community. “

Entry is free, although organisers could do with some free apples for the apple press!

The event is funded by Tameside Council’s Community Chest Fund and Social Cohesion Fund Hyde, Newton Ward.
