Sports Clubs Help Tackle Dog Fouling
Sports clubs are on the ball with a new Tameside Council campaign to tackle dog fouling.
Local teams Stalybridge Celtic
, Ashton Lacrosse
and Dukinfield Rugby Club
will feature in advertisements encouraging dog owners to clean up after their pets.
The campaign is to initially focus on the issue of dog fouling on sports pitches and playing fields where people are discouraged - and in some cases prohibited - from exercising their dogs. But it will move on to highlight the other designated areas of land, such as parks, roads and footpaths, where it is an offence for people not to clean up after their dogs.
It is estimated Tameside has a dog population of 30,000, producing around 12 tonnes of excrement a day.
Dog fouling is a major concern to many people, not just because of the mess it causes but because it can also be linked to health risks.
Tameside Council Executive Member for Environmental Services Cllr Catherine Piddington said: “We recognise that most dog owners are responsible and clean up after their pets, but a small minority continue to cause problems. In these cases we will not hesitate to take action - failing to clean up after your dog can result in a prosecution and fine up to £1000.”
Advice for dog owners:
- Always carry a poop scoop or waste bag to carry the mess to the nearest waste bin. If there isn't a dog mess bin, take it home and dispose of it there.
- Dog owners should not allow their pets to foul at random in public areas. Toilet training at puppy stage helps.
- If possible, you should encourage your dog to use your garden - you can then either bury the mess or flush it down the toilet.
- Do not put dog mess in green garden waste bins.
